A partir du milieu du 13ème siècle, et, jusqu'au 19ème, elles étaient quatorze familles marchandes à dominer le monde politique, le commerce et la vie sociale de Galway.
Parmi ces familles citons les : Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, D'Arcy/Darcy, Deane, Ffont, Ffrench, Joyce, Kirwan, Lynch, Martyn, Morris et Skerrett.
Toutes ces familles avaient des origines anglo-normandes ou cambro-normandes, à l'exception des familles D'Arcy/Darcy (Ó Dorchaidhe) et Kirwan (Ó Ciardhubháin) originaires d'Irlande.
Le terme "Cambro-Normand" s'emploie pour décrire les chevaliers normands qui ont colonisé le sud du Pays de Galles, après la conquête normande de l'Angleterre en 1066.
