Neither English nor French, but Norman.

Speaking as an Englishman, the Queen's title of Duke of Normandy is little more than a historical vanity title, having lost mainland Normandy but for reasons I have forgotten maintaining some sovereignty of the Isles (some of them anyway).  I believe the people of Jersey and Guernsey etc consider themselves to be independent .. although the English Crown would disagree.

I would suggest that the UK has benefited from being an island .. as does Corsica .. cultural identity is so much easier to define (and maintain) when one lives in isolation.  Not that the English are very good at 'identity' since we are an odd mixture of Anglo-Saxon, Germanic, Roman, Norman, Danes, etc .. not forgetting the Breton/Celt influences.

In my opinion Normandie (re-unified) would be sufficiently strong economically to influence and re-absorb the Norman Vexin AND offer an attractive opportunity for the Isles Anglo-Normand ... and THEN it is capable of true independence.

However, this is not to forget that the #1 factor in the economy of medieval Normandie was land .. and the income derived from that land.  With it they built castles and abbeys, and went on crusade ... with a population considered miniscule today ... they had economic powers far greater than modern governments/nation states.  Strange, but true.  

I think lessons need to be learned, and adapted, from the Norman economic model, as well as the socio-political one.  Politics costs money - politicians are expensive - even honest ones.  Therefore a strong Norman economy is necessary.  Every cent that goes out of Norman hands, diminishes Normandie.
