Je me sens Normand.

Hi, my name's Joe, I'm 22 and I actually live in the United States. Also, I unfortunately don't speak very much French, so I use a translator for most of my posts and to view this site. I apologize in advanced if the translation is poor.
I've been doing research on my family history for a few years now, and I know my family from recent generations came over from England. But I always wondered why we never talked about our English heritage and also our appearance. Everyone in my family has very blonde hair and most of us have blue eyes. I thought that was kind of strange for people who are apparently English.
I decided to trace my surname and strangely enough, I found that it originates from just outside of Caen. Now I thought that was really strange because I knew we weren't French. So I decided to research Caen, and in doing so learned about the beautiful history of Normandy and it's people.
I learned about how Normandy was won from the French, and how the Normans created a flourishing empire with their own language, culture, and architecture. I learned about how they spread that culture on a global scale, and even took the throne of England themselves. And that is where I finally learned my heritage.
It turns out, the land in England that my family is from was given to them after the conquest. It all made sense, my blonde hair, my blue eyes, why my family didn't talk about being english, but more importantly why I did not feel english nor did I feel french.
I feel Normand.
And it feels great; to learn where you come from, to learn who your ancestors were, to learn whose blood runs through your veins.
But I also felt great sadness, because I was also forced to realize that I did not have a home country. If I went to England, that wouldn't be my home, and if I went to France, that wouldn't be my home either. Which is why I'm here today, to help the effort for an independent and sovereign Normandy. A Normandy that embraces it's culture, it's people, and it's heritage. One of the greatest and proudest heritages I could imagine.
So after that long introduction, I want to say that I'm so happy a community like this exists and that other people are working towards a free Normandy. I hope that being from the US doesn't make me an outsider, because deep down I feel Normand.

Re: Hello et bonjour
Welcome Joe, I'm from Canada, and my ancestor is also norman and was among the first immigrants who came in the 17th century.
Like you, it was in the search of my origin that I've started to look more in depth about this particular region where my ancestor is coming from. That I've discovered how fantastic the history and the impact of our people had on the destiny of the countries they have conquered or immigrate.
Been an american, did you know that the founder of your country, George Washington, was from a family of norman descent.

There is also, Walt Disney, Elvis Presley, Madonna (from her mother's side), and many more.
Again, welcome on this blog and hope to read you soon!!!

Welcome Joe.
I also speak French poorly, and Normaund not at all .. and like you mourn the fact that I have no 'real' homeland to call my own. I was born in England of course, and am legally English .. but I am Anglo-Norman first .. and it is only when I am surrounded by the glory that was Normandy that I recognise myself (which is probably why I spend so much of my time visiting the sites of our ancestors)..
